Chronicle - GP of Europe - European GP

Alonso wins over the rain and goes to Hamilton
The tremendous rain that has been downloaded on the Nurburgring circuit very beginning of the GP of Europe together with a light shower for ten laps this race has become one of the craziest and most exciting in recent memory.
And the pilot who has best adapted to the conditions was Fernando Alonso, who took his first win since Monaco after a tense final in which he has ahead of Felipe Massa with five laps to the checkered flag checkered.
Mark Webber has managed to climb for the second time in his career on the podium thanks to his excellent third place finish for Red Bull, which also means that for the first time this season Lewis Hamilton has finished in the top three. The British driver has broken his phenomenal run of podium finishes and has not been rated, which is reduced its lead in the World Cup just two points after the victory of Alonso.
Kimi Raikkonen started the race from pole, but just starting the test, the Nurburgring sky has opened and downloaded violent storm water that has broken all previous race strategy.
With rain pelting with intensity, all the drivers entered the pits to put extreme wet tires, but Raikkonen has jumped the pit stop and had to take a turn with dry tires on a soaking wet track.
However, the Finn was lucky and because of the numerous incidents that occurred on that lap, when he finally came to change tires back on track in seventh position. And all because the first corner of the circuit is turned into a real pool of water in which the first went off the track was the Honda of Jenson Button.
Segungos after Tonio Liuzzi was which appeared in the same place as Button, and retreated, but then came Hamilton, Scott Speed, Nico Rosberg and Adrian Sutil. With intermediates being unable to absorb so much water, cars were piled in that first turn and the race director decided to red-flag stop.
However, Hamilton was the only they managed to keep its engine running and after being helped by a crane returned to the track and rejoined the race. The rain ceased to fall rapidly and a summer sun peeked through the clouds. Marcus Winkelhock, which debuted today at the World Cup for Spyker F1, was the only driver who had started the race on intermediate tires and allowed to spend risky bet to lead the race.
However, although the time must have been fantastic for the young German, is soon lost his position, just restart the race. A test Winkelhock was unable to complete a hydraulic failure. Anyway a good debut the German.
Felipe Massa took the lead on the restart, while Hamilton chose to use slicks. It was an unwise decision and gave up further ground, which has spent the rest of the afternoon recovering. Front, Massa set the pace and kept under control while Raikkonen Alonso made his way quickly to regain third place.
The Curse of Räikkönen at the Nurburgring intervene mid-career by being forced to leave. For Ferrari, Massa seemed firmly in control with 11 second lead over second in the second round of stops.
Alonso kept the pressure and reduced the gap to six seconds before the rain started to fall for the second time in the absence of 11 laps. Everyone re-enter the pits, but Alonso forced the maximum reached Massa and advanced dramatically from the outside, standing on his head five laps remaining and finally winning the test. Mark Webber
never had a chance of winning, but had a great race that finished in third place, after enduring a late attack of Alex Wurz in the Williams Toyota. David Coulthard has further improved the day of Red Bull to pass the checkered flag in fifth place.
Nick Heidfeld has had a mediocre career with his BMW Sauber. At the output side has beaten fellow car after Robert Kubica and would do the same with Ralf Schumacher. However, Heidfeld finished sixth ahead of Kubica in his home event
The battle for the last points has been very close. There should have been, as Heikki Kovalainen had secured the fifth position until he entered the pits three laps before the rain again. It was a long shot, but did not work, as he has finished eighth, defending from Lewis Hamilton in their struggle to the last point.
For Hamilton, the ninth position was not a great result, but has done a great race despite the odd error in track and with the strategy. Giancarlo Fisichella has finished tenth in the second Renault ahead Rubens Barrichello, Anthony Davidson and Jarno Trulli.
A very exciting race, resulting in even more fierce the battle for the championship for the next race in Hungary.

- Pole Position - Previous

Raikkonen continues on a roll and gets the pole
In a qualifying session marked by the accident suffered by the championship leader Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen has made the pole ahead of McLaren's Fernando Alonso and the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa.
Hamilton had qualified for the final part of qualifying, but with five minutes remaining, the McLaren driver went off the road and struck violently against the protections, which has led to the emergence of red flags on the track and the suspension of the session. The British driver was making his first attempt at lap when his front right tire has burst. No possibility to correct his career, Hamilton has gone straight to the tire barrier that protects the escape of the curve Schumacher.
The MP4-22 has been seriously damaged, as Hamilton has barely slow the car before impact. The medical team has arrived at the scene of the accident moments after Lewis had left the car and on their own feet.
As usual, the doctors have taken the time to remove the pilot and transferred by ambulance to the medical center, but it seems that does not suffer no serious injury and that tomorrow would take part in the race.
Ron Dennis, McLaren team principal, confirmed that Lewis Hamilton has no serious injuries after he suffered a serious accident six minutes to the end of the qualifying session for the Grand Prix of Europe.
After visiting the current global leader in the medical center Nurburgring circuit, Dennis told the media that "it is okay. Do not break anything or have injuries, but doctors want to keep him under observation for a few hours as a precautionary measure. "
On Hamilton's participation in the Grand Prix Sunday morning in Europe, Britain said it still "too early to say whether it will or not. Fortunately no loss of consciousness. the decision whether or not after a couple of hours of observation."
But returning back to the competition, the fact is that once you have restarted the qualifying session, Fernando Alonso appeared to be completing a lap good enough to win the pole, but a small mistake in the middle sector not has enabled improved reporting of Raikkonen, who tomorrow will start from the top of the grill. Massa finished third, followed by the BMW Sauber of Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica in fourth and fifth place, while Mark Webber has signed an excellent sixth place at the wheel of his Red Bull.
Heikki Kovalainen finished the session with the seventh fastest time, although the rating has not been particularly positive for Renault as team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella has lost one of their attempts to skip one of the chicanes and could not exceed second cut of the session. Tomorrow will output in 13 th position
Toyota has shown good form all weekend, as happened in Silverstone, and will come in eighth and ninth place with Jarno Trulli ahead of Ralf Schumacher. The unfortunate Hamilton, who has not able to participate in the closing laps, has qualified tenth.
In Williams Toyota will be disappointed for having qualified outside the top ten. Nico Rosberg and Alex Wurz were very close and end 11 and 12 degrees, but while others have progressed, especially Webber and Kovalainen, they have left behind.
Four drivers with Honda occupy the 14 to 17, led by Rubens Barrichello followed by the two Super Aguri Honda Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato. Jenson Button has had a bad session and could not get past the first round, which finished 17 th.
Scott Speed \u200b\u200band Tonio Liuzzi have qualified 18 th and 19 th for Toro Rosso, they have not been able to find the pace they expected.
A session to forget about David Coulthard, who lost time behind team-mate Webber in the first round and then returned to the pits, but came too late to make a lap and finished 20 th, ahead of the duo Spyker Ferrari Adrian Sutil and Marcus Winkelhock.
Räikkönen is on a roll, but whatever happens tomorrow, Hamilton will remain head of the championship when the checkered flag falls.

Nürburgring circuit, which will host the Grand Prix of Europe, was leading from the start of Formula 1. German
This circuit is one of the most famous in the international motorsport, but no longer has its historic 22,835 km of track that made him a huge plot.
The original Nürburgring was opened for the first time in the middle of the decade of the 20's and hosted a total of 22 Grands Prix between 1951 and 1976. The first Grand Prix was held in 1951 with victory gives the Ferrari driven by Italian Alberto Ascari.
One of the most remembered was the accident that killed the Austrian Niki Lauda in 1976 and, following this, Nürburgring was excluded from the calendar. His appearance changed abruptly to improve safety and now the picture has nothing like the previous one.

The F1 made its reappearance on the Nürburgring circuit, running a call in 1995 European Grand Prix. Two years later would take place in Jerez, with the same name.
It became a modern circuit with few overtaking opportunities. Located in the Eifel mountains. For this location, the weather is very unstable.
Nürburgring is a maximum downforce circuit, with the modifications have increased the number of slow corners that are associated with other fast. Good traction and grip at low speed are important here as the surface is quite level changes, but it is very smooth with soft covers to be used.
Proper tuning of the suspension is free from primary to high pianos, which tend to punish the car. Overall the car must have good traction, stability, balance and grip.
The altitude is a factor to take into account in Nürburgring, as it is about 500 meters above sea level. In practice, this means the loss of 5% of engine power. The climate is another key element in the German circuit, which is usually quite cold with temperature variations between morning and afternoon, which means a major change in the grip of the cars.
Coming from the goal line, zooming around in top gear, the first Nürburgring curve is something like the first corner in Melbourne. Stepped on the brakes, down to third gear at around 140km / h, turning right and then left. Speeding up to pass on the left and the car is balanced with the throttle in fourth or fifth gear around the turn three. Slowing for the turn four, the Ford Kurve, in second gear to 115km/hy then released into the slope of the hill to the Dunlop Kurve, the fork. Leaving
power is applied there as quickly as possible, went up the hill and accelerating the shift from second gear for cornering six and seven over 250km / h in fifth and sixth place respectively. The following is the RTL Kurve curve is difficult, especially in the wet, but it is also one of the best in the circuit. Slows from gear up to the third and 290km/ha slowing from 150km / h turning the curve to the left, sacrificing and so easy to lay the foundations for the right slightly slower. This area is very important, because any error here is punished in the chicane on the track below. More importantly, if you reach the car in front, then these curves have to be perfect.
is down the hill, either in the tail of the car in front or head, is used throughout the track of the curve and passed back in top gear, you get to the Veedol Chicane and slows down so fast as possible, down five gears for this left-right.
If negotiated while the RTL and straight, then you can put next to the cars on the left and can make an attempt to overtake on the curve. Exiting the chicane you draw the Coca-Cola Kurve as thin as possible, and is back on the goal line for another lap.
The circuit has a length of 5,148 km., The race is 60 laps concerted bringing its total distance will be 308,863 miles.

In 1999, all the leaders lived a very eventful race. Herbert Stewart won driving her in front of Trulli's Prost.
A year later, the race was held in the rain and Schumacher took the opportunity to take the win ahead of both McLaren. Michael got
victory again in 2001 with Juan Pablo Montoya in second place. But it was the second Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello who occupied the first position in 2002 with Michael Schumacher second.
Ralf Schumacher took the victory in 2003, leading a double by Williams team-mate, Juan Pablo Montoya. Ralf Schumacher won the race by 16.8 seconds after snatch the lead from Kimi Raikkonen retired on lap 26. It was a disappointing day for McLaren twice: David Coulthard spun and had to retire two laps from the end, after an intense battle with Fernando Alonso. The Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello completed the podium.
Michael Schumacher achieved his third victory in five years in the 2004 Nurburgring race after crossing the finish line in first position and team-mate Barrichello. Another one-two for Ferrari in the race of the season more comfortable for the Scuderia. Takuma Sato had achieved an excellent second in the qualifying session, but an engine failure ruined his race, while teammate Jenson Button BAR yes that managed another podium by finishing third.
The 2005 race was dominated almost from start to finish for Kimi Raikkonen. However, McLaren's Finnish driver nailed his brakes trying to bend the Sauber of Jacques Villeneuve in the closing laps of the race his tires he created serious problems. When Kimi started the final round of the Grand Prix, vibration that caused his tires was so strong it broke the right front suspension of his car and the Finn went off the track by a top. Fernando Alonso was imposed with an unexpected victory ahead of Nick Heidfeld BMW Williams.
Michael Schumacher used a great strategy for the win in the GP of Europe 2006. Ferrari's German driver stole the victory to Fernando Alonso extending his final pit stop and then rejoined the race ahead of Renault's English driver. Felipe Massa finished third at the wheel of the second Ferrari. Once the responsible
World Championship have made the decision to contest a run in Germany in 2007, the Nurburgring and Hockenheim circuit will alternate from now on the organization of the German Grand Prix.
